UK Desert Garden tour and growing tips
Loved the video.Kris. fabulous planting. The petasites are impressive and frightening at the same time with their growth rate. Much appreciated
Gunnera (don't know which one) has become invasive all over the west and south of Ireland. We have so many invasive species now that are escapees from gardens :-(
Thank you Kris. I live in York & didnt know this garden existed! I will definitely be paying a visit this summer.
Great video and lovely place. Will have to drive down. Thought there might have been more Acer's or did I miss them?
@truth-hurts3089 there's a few in other parts of the garden but I wouldn't say Acers are a main feature of the gardens
8:31 loos like a Pittosporum nana. Lost mine in winter 2022.
❤ does the first grass you mentioned need to be cut down in winter? Thanks
@@PJ-vc5qi best to cut it to ground level in late winter or early spring
Made a weed tea with some seeded weed last night this morning all seeds sprouted out of the weed tea bag😂
Good information Kris, but miss some important information also. And yes I do live in the Netherlands and yes I do have a pretty large canna collection:)
@@tropidutch what is the situation in the Netherlands regarding the virus in garden plants?
@@YorkshireKRISunfortunately there are still alot of virussed plants in the Netherlands:) there are different types of Canna virus also. Even seed grown canna's can be infected with virus but showing in the second or third year or even later. If you grow canna's in full ground and it gets infected you can't plant a new Canna in the same spot for at least 3 years, if you grow in containers make sure to sterilize the containers before planting new canna's in, dont re- use soil for new canna's. I do grow alot of canna's in my small tropical garden too and every year its a risk to expand the collection with new ones, I do buy from private sellers that are aware of virusses and do grow and collect canna's for many years.
Hi, when is the best time to split cannas? Thanks 😊
Spring or in the autumn if lifting them
I got a tricolour Canna last year, and it didn't come up this year. I was really disappointed. Mine came from the garden centre. My others look fine.
This issue was covered by (Mark’s House and Garden UK) also an he show’s examples a taking them out. 👍
Yes he posted a video a few hours after I posted this one

I get Canna Leaf Rollers and have to use spray to rid them unfortunately. But here in Zone 7b in Jackson, TN, U.S.A. with our dreadful heat extremes of summer, often reaching normal temps at or very near 100-degrees F, we get leaf stress here of burning, even with high sun varieties that just cannot take this extreme temps. Hopefully I can keep the canna virus away for awhile longer.
How common is canna virus in the US?
@@YorkshireKRIS Hey Kris! I personally have not run into it and I have grown cannas for many-many years. Again, I have more problem with the Canna leaf rollers and I have to spray "SEVIN" spray to control or NEEM Oil every month during the growing season. I grow a mostly tropical garden as possible here in the southeast in Tennessee Zone 7b. We have a little micro climate where we get unusual weather that may or may not be what the rest of our area gets sometimes. But I will research and ask some friends at the U. of TN Ag Research Center located in my city. Thanks for asking Kris, and have a great day!
Unfortunately I bought Canna from "my Palmshop/Gardenpalms Europe" online which have Canna virus.
@@jolandbos3124 Sorry to hear it
@jolandbos3124 sorry that happened. Our oppressive and unexpected nearly 100 degrees in mid June is not normal and has already taken its toll on several younger plants and seedlings that just cannot take this. Me, either! Hahaha
What's the way to over winter Cannas please?
ruclips.net/video/pwmOaxP4Tas/видео.html
@@YorkshireKRIS thanks Chris. Appreciated.
Thank you for this information
No worries
Would you be able to put the names on the screen please?
I have done exactly this in the video that was published next. Its this video again but with all the names

Amazing he can grow these outside in UK
For canna lilies you can grow them from seed economically (40% germination) and in four months have a canna that will bloom within the year. That is what I plan to do because I want to grow it as an edible plant and I want to plant a large patch of them. Otherwise, it is too expensive. I also want to harvest the foliage to use as mulch and compost it because my soil is bereft of organic matter being made up of clay and sandstone chunks. These borderline tropical plants do love the heat, humidity and sun by and large.
Imagine getting arrested for a damn plant. Who gives a s-💩
I planted my 2ft trunked Trachycarpus too close to the house 20yrs ago (about 4ft away) its now 20ft plus and above house but i spent many year triming perfectly good fronds just to stop them brushing againt the houee and windows.... lesson learned the hard way 😂
It's so easily done when we get a small plant and don't imagine how big they can get both in height and width.
Everything is similar here, hopefully the weather later this month will get everything catching in up!
It's starting to feel warmer from today and looks promising in a few days time.
4 massive specimens in a local nursery to me. (Carmarthenshire)
Lots for sale everywhere in Canada
Are any plants banned in Canada?
I just keep mine under control.....with a spade 😅
Iv bought off ebay
is Darmera peltata classed the same way as i have it growing on the side of my pond
Darmera are totally fine and not banned from being sold or planted
Mine been growing in my garden for 35 years don’t know which variety it is
I’ve seen them for sale in a local nursery (Bedfordshire).
Vertigrow had them in April - they were in the polytunnel with the tree ferns and tetrapanax, though none had price labels on.
Seen them still for sale in garden centre near me in Sheffield
Far too hard to police. And 99% of garden centre customers are just buying plants for their own garden, which is no harm whatsoever!
But it's notable at least local to me that places that use to sell them, haven't done so this year
I commented on a post on the Eden project fb page about them being banned, and someone said they grew and sold them, and I was taking nonsense! I have one in a big container. Had it for 5 years now.
Does being in a pot make it a more manageable size for the average garden ?
I regularly see them on eBay. I have reported to eBay a couple of times but eBay does nothing (their reporting process is useless).
What a do gooder !
Snitch 😂😂
Amazing that people have such small lives to live ...the dire condition of this country is more important than a bloody plant that resembles rhubarb on steroids
Get a life!
I bought one this morning at a local garden centre in sheffield for £9, it’s a good size plant.
It appears news doesn’t travel very fast up north 😂😂😂😂 I’ve got a huge one! in a 3.5foot across & 4ft tall pot. It has grown straight through the pot and anchored its self to the ground.I tried to divide it but that was impossible it was like trying to divide a oak tree.
We bought one a few weeks after the ban was announced, none at the chains around here but between Lincoln and Grimsby there is a place that specializes in pond plants and they say plenty in stock. Also plenty on facebook marketplace. How do you feel about people buying them still Kris?
True, I've seen them for sale online from a place in Lincolnshire and plenty on market place. As a responsible RUclipsr I wouldn't suggest people buy the banned species of Gunneras
Suggests that booster is perhaps good for establishing palms, but my takeaway is that I won’t use it ongoing. Interesting with the booster the primary roots are strong as fewer secondary. Very interesting video. Thanks
I think it’s time to grow gardens for the future, this weather is what we are to expect. The exotic garden is not viable. 😢
The weather changes all the time. The climate has, overall, on average warmed up over the years so there's a place for exotic gardening
what bug spray do you use
Any surface contact one in the greenhouse. I avoid systematic ones.
Sadly this is reassuring that it isn't just my garden that isnt thriving. Great videos as ever Kris
hey Kris what is a good bamboo for height and quick growth ?? garden is looking amazing buddy even if the weather is still naff ..take care Kris
Cheers Fargesia robusta is a good one to go for. 3m tall, quick growing and doesn't send out runners
Unfortunately my plants are mostly just sat waiting for some nice weather and the slugs/snails are decimating some of them.
It's very frustrating
Good to be able to see how your garden is looking, although my garden is looking pretty good with a lot of the plants loving all this rain. The areas of tender plants have been looking so bare. Let's hope we get some warmth soon to get them all going. Thanks for sharing
It has been exceptionally cool up here in Ayrshire this month. Enjoyed the tour.
Hi kris good video my red abbysinian bananas are in pots they are putting out leaves but not getting tall .any help would be be appreciated .Adrian
They tend to do that but some are more likely than others . Many are very squat variants that grow just as wide as tall . See how it is later in the growing season when the leaves are at their largest
Great to see the state of play at yours Kris. I have very little tender plants in my garden for exactly the reason you've demonstrated. Summer is so fleeting I need to have an exotic looking back garden all year round so I've loaded even my ginger bed with trachy hybrids as I was sick at looking at dead space 9 months per year. Other than filling the garden with hardy stuff the only alternative option is to head to the Canaries from January to April every year from 55°N which I'd love to do but sadly can't 😁👍
If they are banning the gunnera why not sycamore and horse chestnut trees they are both very invasive introductions?
That's a question to put to the regulatory bodies.
Hi Chris, which blue bamboo is that at the start, please?
Borinda 1046
Its all a bit depressing isnt it! Roll on the summer!
I think this weather will be here for the rest of the year. Still looking good your garden 🌴
